Saheli Hub

Saheli Hub, founded in 1998 by Naseem Akhtar BEM, is a Birmingham-based charity dedicated to improving community health and wellbeing, particularly among women from ethnic minority backgrounds. Operating from multiple locations, including the Calthorpe Wellbeing Hub, Saltley Wellbeing Centre, and Handsworth Wellbeing Centre, Saheli Hub offers a wide range of free activities and social clubs designed to inspire, educate, motivate, and empower.
Key initiatives include Saheli Runners, Saheli Cycling Club, gardening and nature crafts, crochet and knitting social gatherings, and various holistic interventions. The charity also runs an exercise referral scheme that reaches over 1,700 women annually, focusing on those with poor health outcomes. Additional activities such as bellboating and kayaking are offered in partnership with the Canal & River Trust.
Saheli Hub’s approach, known as “The Saheli Way,” emphasizes delivering services in a culturally sensitive, inclusive, and supportive manner. This methodology has successfully engaged over 2,500 women in learning to ride a bike and has created numerous social networks that promote physical and mental wellbeing. They have also successfully delivered NHS health interventions: A Culturally Appropriate Prevention of Diabetes programme (CAPD), atrial fibrillation (AF) and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
As a partner of BCAN (Birmingham Community Advice Network), Saheli Hub contributes its extensive experience in community health and wellbeing. This partnership aligns with BCAN’s goals of providing community-based support and advice services, leveraging Saheli Hub’s deep-rooted connections and expertise to enhance collective efforts in tackling health inequalities and promoting active lifestyles.
