Legacy West Midlands

Legacy West Midlands is a dynamic community anchor organisation based in Birmingham, dedicated to celebrating local heritage and fostering community cohesion. As a member of the Birmingham Community Anchor Network (BCAN), Legacy WM collaborates with other organisations to address community needs and promote inclusive growth.
Founded in 2010, Legacy WM has evolved from its initial focus on post-war migrant heritage to encompass a broader range of services, including wellbeing, arts, and community development. The organisation’s strength lies in its innovative approach to combining heritage with contemporary community needs, using cultural resources to promote physical and mental wellbeing.
Based at Soho House in Handsworth, Legacy WM delivers projects across northwest Birmingham, focusing on areas facing long-term economic challenges but rich in cultural diversity. Their work spans food heritage, architecture, migration history, and industrial legacy, engaging both young and old community members.
Legacy WM believes in the collective power of partnership to have a greater impact. To this end, they are leading four partnerships that focus on arts, employment and wellbeing. Their impact is evident in its successful programmes, such as the Family Fit health and wellbeing project, which has received extended funding due to its effectiveness. The organisation’s innovative approach has garnered national and international recognition, particularly for its unique blend of wellbeing and heritage initiatives.
As a 2023 King’s Award for Voluntary Service winner, Legacy WM continues to make significant contributions to community development, using heritage as a tool for empowerment and social cohesion.
