Leadership in Action: Ayoub Khan MP Meets B:CAN Cohort
This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Ayoub Khan, MP for Perry Barr, to meet the cohort taking part in the B:CAN Leadership Accelerator. Ayoub shared his inspiring journey, from growing up in Aston to building a successful career as a leading barrister and now serving as the Independent Member of Parliament for Perry Barr.Â
Before becoming an MP, Ayoub served as a local councillor, where he worked closely with residents to address key issues affecting the community, from housing and local services to advocacy and representation. In his current role as MP, he continues this work on a larger scale, representing the interests of Perry Barr in Parliament, contributing to national discussions, and championing the needs of his constituents. His experience across both local and national government gives him a well-rounded perspective on leadership and public service.

Rooted in a strong commitment to his local community, Ayoub spoke about how his passion for supporting people guided his path into public service, first as a councillor and now as an MP. His story resonated strongly with the cohort, highlighting the importance of staying connected to your community and leading with purpose.
During the session, Ayoub offered valuable insights into his approach to leadership. He emphasised the importance of truly understanding your subject area, encouraging participants to be curious, ask questions, and not simply accept information at face value. His message was clear: effective leadership comes from knowledge, critical thinking, and a genuine commitment to making a difference.
The B:CAN Leadership Accelerator is designed to support emerging leaders from across our communities, providing them with the knowledge, confidence and connections to grow their leadership journey. Through a series of inspiring sessions, participants hear from experienced leaders from a range of sectors, gain practical insight into leadership in action, and have the opportunity to reflect on their own development. The programme is about creating space for learning, conversation and progression, while helping to build a strong network of future community leaders.
This programme is supported by The Community Power Fund, thanks to funding from the The National Lottery Community Fund and The National Lottery.
